Ciuleandra de Liviu Rebreanu

Image

The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas Fils

Image
“ They are suns which set as they rose, unobserved. Their death, when they die young, is heard by all their lovers at the same moment, for in Paris almost all the lovers of a well-known woman are friends. A few recollections are exchanged, and everybody’s life goes on as if the incident had never occurred, without so much as a tear .” It is an impressive book, that fascinated readers and critics among generations. The main narrator starts with an almost humble apologize that he can’t tell the story in a way that he could reveal the true feelings of the characters. It is a true story, because Alexandre Dumas Fils writes of his true love which was Marie Duplessis, a true courtesan. In few words, Marguerite is beautiful, intelligent and had a reputation of being discreet a witty lover, she had rich benefactors and was a “kept woman”, a courtesan of Paris The camellias were her favourite flowers and their color white/red were the sign of her availability. She needed love, that pure love th...

Plânsul lui Nietzsche By Irvin D. Yalom

Image

“The Well Of Loneliness” by Radcliffe Hall

Image
“The world hid its head in the sands of convention, so that by seeing nothing it might avoid Truth.” Before I started to read the novel, I read a couple of reviews upon the Stephen, the main character and the plot of the novel. I felt rather disappointed with the thorough description of an abrupt character , a wealthy outsider, a rebel of society because of the sexual controversy of her behavior and afterwards, of her inclination to love and live with women. It’s sad the actual way the same sex love is depicted and judged, misjudged of course, seen as an inversion, like Richard von Krafft-Ebing and Havelock Ellis thought, who argued that lesbianism was not a matter of choice, but was an affliction caused by “congenital inversion” that was present from birth. Morally and psychotherapeutically speaking, the book was a revelation in depicting the life of a woman that rather felt like a man, and loves feminine women, like Mary that finally will leave her and marry a men, after a trap set ...

Virginia Woolf – Jacob’s Room

Image
I found the whole story a shrine to Jacob Flanders, he is the real plot of the inexistent storyline. It’s like a sketch of the Great Gatsby, rather seen through the eyes of the other characters. The dialogues, the life quotes, the wishful thinking are modern, yet Jacob is not present. It’s like the story of the soul inside from outside. A rather original form of writing and describing a character’s fundamentals and rules of life. The beginnings of Virginia Woolf…. “The strange thing about life is that though the nature of it must have been apparent to every one for hundreds of years, no one has left any adequate account of it. The streets of London have their map; but our passions are uncharted. What are you going to meet if you turn this corner?”  “Life is but a procession of shadows, and God knows why it is that we embrace them so eagerly, and see them depart with such anguish.”  “Why, from the very windows, even in the dusk, you see a swelling run through the street, an aspiration, ...

Carol / The Price Of Salt - Patricia Highsmith

Image
“I feel I stand in a desert with my hands outstretched, and you are raining down upon me…” “I will comb you like music caught in the heads of all the trees in the forest…”

DH Lawrence - "The Rainbow"

Image
The horror of not being ourselves without the other being frightens us even now, because this abandon–the feeling of being in love for real and finally found the other part of the self- does not abolish the self, but enriches it by becoming a greater self, a complex self of two beings as one self – the twilight concept of the soulmate . The myth of the flood, the blood intimacy, the change of souls into the acknowledgement of the selves turned into a certain rage of men against women when they discovered they were dependent on them and not the vice-versa, rather the merging of the souls by becoming independent selves and not always creating the dual being of both in one and, most important of all, the kernel, are the main themes of DH Lawrence’s thinking. The novel tells the story of the Brangwens, who had lived for generations at the Marsh farm, yet as the generations grow, they try to break away from inoculating society’s ideas and visions of life and love. The men were dominated by ...
